Topeka Rugby Club is a member of the Heart of America Rugby
Football Union. HOARFU is one of 37 Local Area Unions within USA Rugby, and one
of seven within the Territorial Union the Western Rugby Football Union. A club is a non-for-profit organization that
must pay dues to all of these unions to be considered in good standing and be
able to play games. On top of this requirement, each rugby player must also pay
dues to USA Rugby which provides liability insurance to each member. This liability insurance protects all
registered rugby players against lawsuits from any rugby related injuries and
such (i.e. somebody gets hurt by you, they can’t sue you). These fees are annual and must be paid every
year.
On top of this, a team is required to provide after game entertainment (food & beer) and referee fees for all home games. This is paid out-of-pocket by each team. To cover this, veteran players (players with more then one season) pay dues per season (two seasons in a year) coupled with an annual fundraiser on top of their annual fees they owe to all the unions.
Topeka Rugby doesn't collect player dues from new players. A new player is classified as any player with less then one season under their belt. What we do collect however is enough money to cover all your union dues mentioned above and provide you with team gear such as shorts, socks and workout t-shirt.
